Crochet Unicorn Pattern

Crochet Unicorn Pattern

unicorn2

I can share this precious pattern with you now I’ve given her to the beautiful little girl she was designed for. A very dear friend was recently blessed with her second child, and I have been working on this ever since I found out she was pregnant. Spending that amount of time on a pattern is a real luxury, but it meant that I was able to frog and rework sections until I was absolutely happy.
I also drooled every time I used the yarn. King Cole Country Tweed in ‘Cotswold’ is gorgeous. The colour phasing is gorgeous. The feel is gorgeous. It is gorgeous.

I’m so thrilled with the outcome and I hope she is played with, mucked on, dirtied up and generally loved because THAT’S WHY WE MAKE TOYS!

Don’t forget, if you are going to make one of these for a baby, make absolutely sure that everything to stitch together or stitch on is absolutely secure and safe. I prefer embroidered eyes even to safety eyes and I knot every strand of hair in place to make sure they stay put.

Surface crochet the horse shoes in dcs on base of each hoof as follows:
Starting between the 4th and 5th rnds, surface crochet 22dc (this will have the natural curve of a horse shoe) before turning work a quarter turn clockwise, 1dc to bridge rnd 4, quarter turn again to work between rnds 3 and 4 to complete the horseshoe with 18dc. Quarter turn once you are next to the start position and bridge the final st gap with the last dc. Break thread and pull through to finish.

Weave in all ends to complete the unicorn.

Hair

Using 20-25cm strands of hot pink, I used about 80. Knot a 3-4 st channel of hair from directly behind the horn to half way down the back of your Unicorn as follows:
Insert hook to pick up post of stitch on head or body (like you are about to surface crochet), catch the centre point of a single strand of hair, pull through work. Catch both strands and pull them both through the loop on your hook. Pull and wiggle to tighten securely to your Unicorn. Trim hair as required to tidy up uneven ends.

Tail

Use 20-30 strands of 20-25cm long hot pink yarn. Knot the centre point of all the strands together securely and sew into place on the Unicorn’s bum
